STG Defence, a Ukrainian military defense technology company, has developed a camouflage poncho capable of resisting thermal imaging.

The innovation, presented at the Brave1 Connect event, was detailed by the company in an interview with the website Militarnyi. According to STG Defence, the project emerged after studying technologies already available in other countries.

However, this type of camouflage system can cost over $2,000 — a price considered too high for large-scale use by Ukrainian forces, which have been at war with Russia since February 2023.

Therefore, STG Defence partnered with the Central Directorate for the Development and Support of Ukraine’s Material Supply to create the poncho using technology that provides better cost-effectiveness.

The poncho was produced using a metallized nylon fabric with embedded silver crystals — a combination that provides protection against thermal imaging surveillance.

The material can either retain body heat or disperse it across designated areas, as well as reflect infrared radiation, making the soldier’s outline less visible to night vision systems.

Testing is already underway, and the poncho has received positive technical feedback. Now, STG Defence awaits approval from Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense for wider deployment.
